[CHF 2021 Interview] Mr. Chen Che, Vice President of The Youth Committee of China Horse Industry Association, General Secretary of Beijing Turf & Equestrian Association
What are the trends in the numbers of young people taking up riding?
According to the report on the development of the Chinese Equestrian market made by the Beijing Equestrian Association over recent years, China's youth equestrian population is showing rapid growth. By the end of 2019, young riders under the age of 18 accounted for 90% of all club riders, which is about 900,000 regular participants.

What do these trends mean for the long term development of the sector in China?
This trend means the Chinese Equestrian market should allocate resources and provide products and services aimed at young riders. In the long run the Chinese Equestrian market is a sustainable and rapidly expanding market.

What are the main challenges facing the sector as it looks to grow and become more accessible?
I feel that the biggest challenge lies in the upgrading of our equestrian industry. As teenagers become the main consumer group, we need to try and solve the problems such as having sufficient  numbers of professionally trained front-line coaches, equine workers, veterinarians and club managers etc. Can we keep up with growing market demand and whether the related courses,  examinations, competitions, facilities, horses, media and other supporting products and services are fit for purpose? Do we really realize that "international standard equestrian education" is at the core of teenagers learning properly about equestrian sports?

Why are events such as China Horse Fair important to the industry? What do you hope to gain from supporting China Horse Fair 2021?
Exhibitions are an important communication platform for industry development, especially  vertical industry exhibitions held over a long period e.g. for more than 10 years. China Horse Fair is just such an exhibition which has been part of the country’s equestrian industry for more than 10 years, its continuing influence in the field of equestrian development in China and abroad is irreplaceable.
The Youth Committee of China Horse Industry Association hopes to introduce the development of China's youth equestrian program to peers from all over the world through the exhibition. We hope to see Chinese youth equestrian related institutions and enterprises engage with international providers of youth equestrian services and products, so as to learn from and improve their own products and services.

What would you say to an international company who are nervous about entering the Chinese market?
Any emerging market has its imperfections and uncertainties, but it is certain that China will become the world's largest equestrian market and the horse industry is being vigorously developed by the Chinese government. There is a saying that ‘time waits for no one’ and this is relevant for all foreign enterprises who want to enter China.
